It has changed from a quiet fishermen village into a booming town with excellent hotels, night clubs, and luxurious restaurants. Its original name was "Puerto de la Mar" (Port of the Sea) but the people shortened it to Porlamar. Porlamar is located on the Caribbean Ocean and has several nice beaches right in the city. The principal street in Porlamar is the Avenida 4 de Mayo. It is filled with restaurants, shopping, banks, night clubs and casinos. Our apartment is very quiet as it faces towards the ocean and away from the bustle of the street. Margarita Island was made duty-free in 1973 so there is great shopping in the city and in the upscale malls. Margarita is the largest of about 72 islands sprinkled through the blue waters off Venezuela's northern coast. Margarita is a Caribbean island by virtue of geography and climate. "Pearl of the Caribbean" and "CancĂșn south" are just two of its nicknames and it has a reputation for delivering the Caribbean experience on the cheap.
